Nationalist Republican Awards (1929-date)

bulletHistorical Background

The Nationalists, under the leadership of Dr. Sun Yat-sin,  were among the earliest in demanding a Republican form of government during late Qing.  Members of the modern army of the Qing Dynasty sympathetic to the Nationalist/Republican cause were responsible for rebellions in Guangzhou, Wuchang, etc. in 1910-11.  When the Empire fell, Nationalist groups actually set up the provisional government of the Republic in Nanking, and elected Dr. Sun as their provisional president.

However, due to their lack of a strong political organization and military prowess, the Nationalists were not able to maintain control of the early Republic.  In the interest of preserving a Republican form of government without a civil war, Dr. Sun opted to invite the powerful Qing military leader, Yuan Shih-kai, to to assume the position of the Presidency in Nanking.  Yuan agreed to take the position, but decided to stay in Peking, where his power base was.

Almost as soon as Yuan assumed presidency, many Nationalists realized that Yuan was not a true believer of either the republican form of government or full democracy.  A long period of internal struggle began in which the Nationalists fought from their power bases in the South on and off with the warlords loyal to the Peking government in the North.

Chiang Kai-shek

Dr. Sun was the leader of the Nationalists campaigns until his death in 1925.  Then Chiang Kai-shek became the leader, and was instrumental in leading the successful Northern Expedition of 1926, when the Nationalists captured many big cities in central and eastern China, and set up the capital in Nanking again.  By 1929, the Nationalists had control of the whole country.  The party's rule of the country continued until 1949, when it was driven to the Island of Taiwan by the Communist forces.
