Nationalist Republican Civilian Orders

        When Dr. Sun Yat-sen was in power briefly right after the fall of the Manchu Dynasty, rules and regulations for a new military and civilian award system were promulgated.  But because Dr. Sun soon gave up power in favor of Yuan Shik-kai in Peking, the system was apparently never implemened.  In December, 1933, soon after the Nationalists regained control of the country, the Republican government established yet another new civilian award system, consisting initially of the Grand Cordon of the Order of Brilliant Jade and the Order of Brilliant Jade.  In February, 1941, the Grand Cordon of the Order of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Order of Propitious Clouds, and the Order of Brilliant Star were added.   The Grand Cordon of the Order of Chiang Kai-shek was instituted in Taiwan in 1980.
